Interview Requirements After your application has been submitted and accepted, a member of the Admissions Office will contact you to schedule your admissions interview. The interview is an opportunity to evaluate the traits you will bring to the incoming cohort. You will be evaluated by at least two members of the Board of Admissions.
USCG LICENSE REQUIREMENTS The Associate in Applied Science in Nautical Science program offered by NMI restrict students with physical disabilities under certain circumstances due to United States Coast Guard requirements. For these programs, all students are required to have completed a United States Coast Guard physical examination prior to participating in the program. This assures NMI and the student that they are able to successfully complete the program and licensing requirements. LICENSE REQUIREMENTS The license requirements of the Degree/License program are governed by a number of external regulations: United States Coast Guard regulations for obtaining a Merchant Marine Officers' license, the Commonwealth of Dominica Maritime regulations and the Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) promulgated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
CHEMICAL TESTING PROGRAM Northeast Maritime Institute (NMI) requires participation and strict adherence to its Chemical Testing Program by all college students. Offer of student enrollment is contingent upon successful submission of a negative drug test result which is compliant with requirements put forth by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the United States Coast Guard (USCG). The negative test results must be submitted prior to Student Orientation. NMI’s Chemical Testing Program is operated in accordance with the USCG and any positive result during a student’s enrollment is submitted to the USCG and may affect a student’s USCG licensing status and standing in NMI’s college program. PRIVACY STATEMENT By completing the registration form, I understand information will be held in confidence and Northeast Maritime Institute will only disclose information to authorized school officials who act in the students’ educational interest within the limitations of their “need to know” and to authorized government entities. MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS Candidates wishing to serve as officers in the United States Coast Guard Merchant Marine are subject to certain minimum physical requirements prescribed by the United States Coast Guard for licensing eligibility. Coast Guard regulations concerning the original licensing of Merchant Marine Officers require the applicant to have uncorrected vision of at least 20/100 in both eyes, correctable to at least 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other eye for Deck Officers. For Engineering Officers, uncorrected vision must be 20/100 in both eyes, correctable to at least 20/30 in one eye and 20/50 in the other. Inadequate color perception may disqualify an applicant for licensure. The Coast Guard routinely authorizes waivers of uncorrected vision up to 20/200 and will consider waivers for vision below that level. The Commonwealth of Dominica Maritime Administrations had adopted these guidelines as well. You will be asked to upload your Medical/Physical document on your applicant status page after you submit your application.
